And the 49ers’ once-formidable offensive line can recapture its outstanding form. That could be easier said than done considering this group will be minus a few key performer.

The team lost three-time Pro Bowl left guard Mike Iupati (currently injured) to the Arizona Cardinals and right tackle Anthony Davis announced his retirement. Both were first-round picks in 2010 and the latter could possibly return in a year but they are big blows to a unit that was once one of the best in the league.

Veteran Joe Staley remains at left tackle, veteran Alex Boone takes over for Iupati and for now, free-agent pickup Erik Pears is the new right tackle. But it will be interesting to see how center and right guard play out. Earlier this summer, versatile Marcus Martin (via 49ers.com) talked about working at two different positions during training camp.

It will be interesting to see how it all plays out. If you’re new head coach Jim Tomsula, perhaps the less interesting the better.
