But
If the San Francisco defense can’t overcome a slew of losses and carry the load until the offense finds itself, it’s going to be another frustrating year for this franchise.
Gone are retired performers such as linebackers Patrick Willis and Chris Borland and defensive tackle Justin Smith. Troubled outside linebacker Aldon Smith wore out his welcome as is now looking for a job, while effective cornerbacks Chris Culliver (Redskins) and Perrish Cox (Titans) are with new teams.
The return of inside linebacker NaVorro Bowman after missing all of 2014 is vital and it remains to be seen if he can recapture his perennial Pro Bowl form. Former Cardinals defensive tackle Darnell Dockett and veteran Glenn Dorsey look to rebound after lost seasons as well. Meanwhile, young linebackers such as Aaron Lynch, Nick Moody and rookie Eli Harold must emerge sooner than later.
Yes, it would be an understatement to say that new defensive coordinator Eric Mangini has his work cut out for him.
