Cleveland Browns RB Duke Johnson

Defensive tackle Danny Shelton and converted wide receiver Terrelle Pryor offer compelling cases (Shelton is obviously the better bet of the two), but I’m going to tab Duke Johnson as the Cleveland Browns biggest X-Factor in 2015. It’s unclear when Johnson will be cleared from his concussion, and this second offseason injury to Miami’s all-time leading rusher could compel the Browns to take things very cautiously with their third-round investment.

With Isaiah Crowell and Terrance West, who has been mired in trade and release rumors, bumbling about this offseason, Johnson clearly brings the most talent and upside to the table in both the running and passing game. His injuries are a big deal, but so are his explosiveness and underrated ability in between the tackles. Johnson is a more natural rusher than either Crowell or West, and while Crowell brings some nice one-cut ability to the table, Johnson does a much better job of making defenders miss.

The nature of the Browns passing attack dictates that it would be ideal for this team to have a strong running game comprised of two capable backs, and I definitely don’t think West fits the bill here. At this point, the Browns need to hope Johnson can return sooner rather than later and prove that RBs don’t have a steep learning curve in this league.
