New York Jets CB Buster Skrine

It was difficult to pick an X-Factor for the Jets, because their team’s best players are all known commodities who are touted for their talents, whether it’s Brandon Marshall, Chris Ivory, Leonard Williams, or Revis.

So I’m going to go with one of the team’s three big free agent signings at cornerback in Buster Skrine, and I have a feeling new head coach Todd Bowles sees a boatload of potential in this guy. After all, the Jets will pay him $13 million in guaranteed money on a four-year deal that could be worth $25 million. It’s a significant investment in a player who was frustratingly inconsistent at times for the Cleveland Browns.

But the gamble is understandable, and it’s not just because Bowles has a terrific track record. Look, Skrine has put up back-to-back seasons with 18 passes defended, is still just 26, and is one of the quickest players at the position in the league. Eight touchdown passes surrendered, as per Pro Football Focus, is simply too much, but if he plays to his raw talent, then he can be exactly the playmaking “X-Factor” this scary-looking Jets defense could use.

With Revis as the No. 1 CB, Skrine will have the freedom to go for picks (he had four last season), and that’s key for a Jets defense that had the third-lowest interceptions forced in 2014 (six).

Here is Revis on Skrine’s tools:
