Will the Rookies be Utilized?
It’ll be interesting to see how defensive mastermind Dom Capers uses his new rookies, cornerbacks Damarious Randall and Quinten Rollins. It’s fair to assume the starting corners will be Sam Shields and Casey Hayward so the rookies might find early work in the slot and sub packages.
Even undrafted Ladarious Gunter made an impression early on as a physical corner and will look to build on that confidence. The Packers decided to keep 11 defensive backs on the roster and for good reason; in today’s NFL, a team can never have enough cornerbacks. It is one of the most important positions on a team’s roster.
The signing of James Jones likely means third round pick Ty Montgomery will take a backseat in the passing game. We all know how important it is for Rodgers to have confidence in his young receivers which all comes with time in the offense. Montgomery will be involved when called upon but his focus should be on special teams. With Nelson and Cobb missing time this past month, McCarthy feared he was throwing too much at the Stanford product.
