Goal Line Stand

Though Matt Forte ripped the Packers defense all day long, seemingly, the defense came up big in the fourth quarter. With just over seven minutes left in the last period and a score of 24-16 in favor of the Packers, the Bears were threatening to score and tie up the game. Cutler had a first and goal situation on Green Bay’s six-yard line.

On first down, Cutler found Forte underneath for a gain of two yards before he was pushed out of bounds. On second and goal, the Packers brought pressure and forced Cutler to almost throw an interception but the pass was still incomplete. Another blitz by the defense on third down led to Cutler scrambling and throwing an incomplete pass. Finally on fourth and goal, Green Bay blitzes again and the quarterback had to toss up a prayer to Eddie Royal. Royal had a chance for a touchdown had the throw not been forcefully overthrown.

The Packers defense was all over Cutler in this sequence of plays and brought heavy pressure on almost every down. The defense held its own and kept Chicago out of the end zone, preserving an eight-point lead. That lead turned out to be the difference in the game and having a goal line stand in the fourth quarter was monumental.
