Another veteran who has a ton of experience in a pro-style offense, Connor Cook is going to a strong look for all team at the beginning of the draft. Think Kessler with legitimate NFL size and arm strength, and much better college production.
We have focused on a lot of quarterbacks up until this point. For the most part, these guys are either pro-ready QBs with a relatively limited skill-set, or a QB filled with skills and potential who is not pro-ready. Cook is the first guy with great skills and is clearly pro-ready.
Cook really does have it all. He has been the starting quarterback in Michigan State’s pro-style offense for three years now. His obvious understanding of pro-style passing concepts jumps off the screen while watching Cook. He is certainly a player who can step in right away and handle any NFL offense that is given to him. He is a great college quarterback, but his game is even better suited for the pros.
Cooks possess an extremely strong throwing arm that he is not afraid to use. He is accurate passer all over the field. Short, deep, outside or inside, it does not matter. Cook has the arm to get it there, and the accuracy and timing to keep it away from the defense.
While he will never be mistaken for a running quarterback, Cook does have solid mobility that he uses to escape pressure very well. He has a strong sense of pressure in the pocket, rarely allowing the pass rush to affect his ability to throw the ball. Cook can also throw on the run extremely well.
If we have to find a negative with Cook, it is probably his footwork. It has seemed to improve this season, but it has been an issue with the quarterback in the past. I fully expect NFL coaches to be able to clean up his footwork, but it is something he will have to work at.
Teams who want a pro-ready quarterback with a wide-ranging skill-set will be tripping over themselves for an opportunity to draft Cook. He is an elite QB prospect who should be a top five pick. Certainly number one overall potential.
