Second Quarter Time Snafu

After the Giants were called for a penalty with the clock ticking down. The clock was stopped properly for the penalty, but was not restarted correctly after the penalty call. Due to the Eagles calling a running play, the clock should have restarted before the next play. Instead, the Eagles had another 5-7 seconds to work with. This could have allowed them to score a touchdown instead of just a field goal or be stopped by the Giants D.

They settled for a field goal and given they had two timeouts at the time of the clock snafu, Chip Kelly was getting ready to call a timeout. Nonetheless, timing issues with clock operators and officiating crews has been a big issues this year. In this case, the refs are to blame for not signaling for the clock to begin.

This issue didn’t decide the outcome of Monday night’s game, but it could have. It will be interesting to see who the NFL suspends for this latest edition of clock operation fail.
