Collin Kaepernick vs. the St. Louis defensive line

Chris Long, Aaron Donald, Nick Fairley, Michael Brockers, Robert Quinn, William Hayes.

Each of these players has been key to the Rams success on defense this season, and several of them could be the best defensive lineman on most teams in the league. Luckily for the St. Louis Rams, they’ve got all of them and can use them this week to dominate the San Francisco 49ers.

San Francisco quarterback Collin Kaepernick has taken his fair share of hits this season, and has to expect he’s going to take plenty more on Sunday in Saint Louis. Only Seattle’s Russell Wilson has been sacked more times than Kaepernick, and Kaepernick is on pace to take 58 sacks this year.

The last time a player was sacked more than 58 times in a season was in 2006 when John Kitna was taken down 63 times. The Rams are on pace to sack opposing quarterback 61 times this year. This pass rush could slow a bit if starting defensive end Chris Long misses a second straight game with a knee injury, but the Rams’ depth at the position could mean Long’s absence wouldn’t even matter.

Collin Kaepernick is questionable this week with a thumb injury, in which case Blaine Gabbert would likely get the start. Whether it’s Kaepernick or Gabbert, whoever plays quarterback for the 49ers this week will likely feel like they’ve been in a horror movie after the beating they take on Sunday.
