1. What does the horse’s mouth say?

"“I think the trade deadline’s coming, and we’re probably going to be more buyers than sellers.”"

The above quote comes straight from the horse’s mouth- that would be Mayhew, the Lions GM- via MLive.com scribe Kyle Meinke, and it’s unclear how much stock we should put in this statement from the club’s chief decision-maker. But based on subsequent quotes from Mayhew, it seems like the Lions are more interested in making deals that will help them as a whole, as opposed to mortgaging on the future.

Mayhew has, in general, done a good job of leading the Lions, and he’s made some killer draft picks. The problem is that the big Megatron, Matthew Stafford, and, previously, Ndamukong Suh contracts have weighed him down, and he has to be feeling the pressure of the Lions struggles this season.

It still seems like he’s a believer in this squad, judging by the fact that he almost laughably suggested that the Lions are more likely to be in the market to acquire help. Mayhew thinks he can turn this around, and that mentality might be enough to hold off on a move.
