Indianapolis Colts: The Quarterbacks

There’s no real way to define what has been surprising about Andrew Luck‘s season so far, so we’ll just have to look at every aspect of it. On the other side, Luck’s backup Matt Hasselbeck has been excellent when we’ve seen him on the field, not really something we expected from the 40-year old.

For Andrew Luck, the season didn’t get off to a great start. Through the first three weeks of the season, Luck threw 7 interceptions to only 5 touchdowns, and his Colts were 1-2, those losses coming in embarrassing fashion at the hands of the Jets and the Bills in the first two weeks. Week 3 saw Luck lead his team back from a 13 points 4th quarter deficit to barely eek out a 35-33 win against the Tennessee Titans who currently hold the league’s second-worst record.

Enter: Matt Hasselbeck.

The 17-year veteran stepped in as the starter when Andrew Luck suffered a shoulder injury (and possible rib injuries via NFL.com) that forced him to miss two games. Hasselbeck came in to lead the team to consecutive victories against the (admittedly bad) Texans and Jaguars. Hasselbeck finished his two games as a starter with 495 yards and 3 touchdowns, and led the league in Total QBR (92.1) in Week 5.

Nobody really thought Hasselbeck was a better quarterback than Luck, so Luck took back over when he returned from his injury in Week 6. Luck has been the starter since then, and in that span the Colts are 1-3 and he has thrown 10 touchdowns to 5 interceptions.

Luck and his Colts may have gotten back on the right track in Week 9 as they handed the Denver Broncos their first loss of the season. Luck still completed less than 60% of his passes, but managed 252 and 2 touchdowns, and was able to keep from throwing any picks. Now, Luck is set to miss even more time with a lacerated kidney, and Hasselbeck will step in to take his place. I for one am excited to see how this drama unfolds.
