5A/5B. Current College Coach

Kevin Sumlin

Here is a coach that is always being floated around to make the jump up to the NFL. Sumlin is 71-31 as a college head coach, with his stint at Houston where he went 35-17 in his four years there (2008-2011) and is currently 36-14 as the head coach of Texas A&M (2012-present).

Sumlin has a fast-paced offense at A&M, which is similar to what the Eagles run now. He is a stand-up guy and a coach many people love. He could be exactly what they need next in Philly and could be the one to make all of Kelly’s wrongdoings right.

Sumlin did sign a nice deal with the Aggies in 2013, but according to Steve Berkowitz of USA Today Sports, Sumlin’s deal requires him to only pay a $5 million dollar buyout if he would leave.

David Shaw

Shaw is an intriguing option for the Eagles. He is currently the head football coach at Stanford University  where he currently has a career record of 51-14. Shaw may be hard to get however, as he is a Stanford graduate and has been the head coach from 2011 to present time.

If you did not know or remember, Shaw was the Eagles quarterback coach in 1997, so he has that connection to the Eagles.

Shaw runs a pro-style offense, so it may be a big change for the Eagles. He does have a great background with quarterbacks, as he was a QB coach in the NFL for eight years, and was Andrew Luck’s college coach.

Both of these would be long shots in my opinion. If the Eagles fire Kelly, I highly doubt they will go hire a college coach who is not a proven NFL coach, which is exactly what Kelly was.

The Eagles may feel that they will try again with a college coach, and if they do, these two will be on the top of their lists.
