California. Jared Goff. 1.07. player. 42. The hiring of Chip Kelly to be the 49ers’ head coach makes this selection much more difficult. It is certainly possible that Kelly comes in and wants to give Colin Kaepernick a chance to perform in his system. That being said, Kaepernick has had ample opportunity to prove himself, and looked awful last season. Is Kelly really ready to attach his ship to him in what could be his last NFL opportunity?

Kaepernick’s speed and obvious athleticism would make him a strong fit in that aspect of Kelly’s system. However, Jared Goff’s quick release and obvious arm talent makes him an ideal candidate in any offense, including Kelly’s which is similar to what Goff ran in college.

Goff is my favorite quarterback prospect in this class. He shows some nice athleticism for the quarterback position, doing a great job of using mobility to add extra time to make a decision. He does not have the natural speed of Kaepernick or a Mariota, but Goff has nice maneuverability in the pocket.

Most notably, Goff is an incredibly accurate passer, showing pin-point accuracy on nearly all of his throws. Short, deep or anywhere in between, it does not matter. Goff will thread the needle. He does not possess the strongest throwing arm, but he can make all of the necessary throws at the next level.

He did benefit from playing in an up-tempo offense in college that typically allowed for quick and easy decisions for the quarterback. Goff was rarely asked to make multiple progressions, but he did show the ability to do so every once in a while.

Goff’s stats were helped by his college offensive system, but it may hinder his development a bit at the next level. That being said, I have complete confidence in his ability at the quarterback position, and think that he would be a slam dunk selection for the 49ers here.
. QB
