Vikings sign Harrison Smith to massive extension

In all honesty, this isn’t the boldest of predictions. The Vikings and Spielman have already made it clear that an extension is likely in Smith’s immediately future after a Pro Bowl season from the sensational safety. Still, it seemed worth noting that this deal is on the verge of getting done as we close in on free agency.

We’ve known it for some time, but Smith is one of the best safeties in the NFL right now. Not only does he do a great job of making his presence felt in the passing game, but he truly shines as a run defender, bringing the boom on runners and routinely dragging down backs behind the line of scrimmage. He was one of the keys to the Vikings’ defensive success in 2015, and should continue to be a star for the foreseeable future.

There’s no question that Smith deserves to be paid as one of the NFL’s best, and he should earn that designation very soon.
