NFL: Worst Free-Agent Contracts of 2016
By John Laird
At the start of the league year, billions of dollars are shelled out to the hottest names on the free agent market. More times then not, these players don’t necessarily live up to the big money deals. Here we take a look at the top 10 worst contracts that teams given players so far.
The Super Bowl in March, nothing like it. This is the time of the year when team’s are over paying for the players who they feel can help turn around their fortune. Too often, too many people assume that whoever spends the most money on the biggest names are automatically amongst the best teams in the league.
Is it result from football deprivation? Most likely.
With the salary cap increasing around $12 million from the previous year, that only means more teams will overpay available players by a whole lot more then usual.
Teams like Jacksonville, Miami, amongst others are usually on this list on an annual basis. Teams who don’t make the playoffs will pay certain players a boat load of money to keep their fan base on board. Being the biggest spenders in free agency rarely, if ever results in a winning team. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk (in this 2011 piece) reminds of the “dream team” that was the Philadelphia Eagles.
Here we’ll take a look at ten contracts who greatly benefit the individual, but will eventually blow up in the teams’ faces. NOTE: Credit to Spotrac for all contract figures.
