NFL: Worst Free-Agent Contracts of 2016
By John Laird
7. QB Brock Osweiler, Houston Texans
The Houston Texans had a gaping hole at quarterback and they decided to fill it by signing former Denver Broncos signal caller Brock Osweiler to a four-year, $72 million dollar deal with $37 million guaranteed.
The Texans decided after only a seven game sneak-peak, that Osweiler was worth that insane amount of money over such a short contract. In those seven starts, He tossed 10 touchdowns to go with six interceptions. The impressive thing I did see from the former Arizona State player was that he was able to amass nearly 2,000 yards passing in that short amount of time.
A huge contributor to those numbers were the players around him. Who wouldn’t love throwing the ball to Demaryius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, and Owen Daniels who is always a perfect fit for Gary Kubiak‘s offense. Who does he have down in Houston? Deandre Hopkins, that’s it. The Texans are expecting Osweiler to do better than what he did with only a third of the talent, maybe less. Good luck to you, Brock.
Don’t get me wrong, Brock Osweiler is a solid fit for that offense. But I have a hard time justifying $72 million over four years. You add one more year to the deal, and he wouldn’t be on this list.
At least for Osweiler, with his new deal, he can follow his arm tattoo and ‘Live life to it’s fullest’.
