NFL: Worst Free-Agent Contracts of 2016
By John Laird
3. DE Malik Jackson, Jacksonville Jaguars
There should be zero surprise here. The Jaguars decided to ink former Denver Broncos pass rusher Malik Jackson to a five year deal worth $85.5 million. $42 million of that is guaranteed.
Yeah the Jaguars got caught up in the hype. Believing that adding a side piece from a Super Bowl champion will help turn around their fortune. Jackson was able to get 45 tackles and 5 sacks last year. And that was playing with the likes of Von Miller, DeMarcus Ware and Derek Wolfe. Those numbers don’t seem in the ball park of $85.5 million, especially when you have all of that talent taking blockers away from you.
But hey, the Jaguars know something we don’t, right?
You only pay money like that to a defender if they average double digit sacks on an annual basis. Jackson only was able to get five sacks. In his four years of playing professional football, the former Tennessee Volunteer was able to get a total of 14 sacks. Something doesn’t add up here.
If the Jaguars are paying Jackson for his great run-stuffing ability, then words can’t describe how much they over paid the defensive lineman.
The greatest possible thing that can come from this signing is that Malik Jackson would take away blockers and former first round selection Dante Fowler takes advantage of the single blocking. Fowler missed his rookie year to a knee injury but has a boat load of talent.
