Washington Redskins: What Will Compton Brings to the Table
By Hunter Noll
It’s hard to find weaknesses on the Washington Redskins roster, and despite what some may think, Will Compton isn’t one of them.
In the past, the Redskins depth chart was filled with holes. It’s been said that they had no secondary, bad quarterbacks, abysmal receivers, a terrible offensive line that was rivaled by their dreadful defensive line. Every few years, that would change, and one would get better while the others got worse.

One of the constants has been their linebacking corp however. London Fletcher, Marcus Washington, LaVar Arrington, Rocky McIntosh, Brian Orakpo, and Ryan Kerrigan are just some of the linebackers that have helped keep this position afloat for so many years.
Kerrigan is still there, and he’s got Preston Smith and Junior Galette covering the outside with him now. That’s a deadly pass rushing group right there. Who’s plugging up the middle though? That would be Compton with the assistance of Mason Foster. Martrell Spaight and Perry Riley Jr. add depth to the position.
This article isn’t about everyone else however, it’s about Compton and the level of disrespect his game gets.
The 26-year old middle linebacker signed a one-year deal with the Redskins this offseason worth $600,000 (via Mike Jones of the Washington Post). That makes him a prime candidate for one of the best values in football this season.
What does a 2013 undrafted linebacker from Nebraska bring to the table?
In his rookie year, Compton played in one game, and had one tackle. In 2014, he posted 60 tackles in 16 games (five starts). Last season, Compton appeared in 16 games once again (10 starts) posting career highs in tackles (96), pass deflections (3), interceptions (1), and fumble recoveries (1).
Not only has Compton proven that he can be a competent starter, he’s improved heavily in each season so far. Also, his celly game was pretty strong in 2015, you’ve got to be jacked up about what he’s got in store in this department for the future.
When it comes to his potential, there’s no reason to shortchange him. At 6’1″ and 238 pounds, Compton’s got the perfect build. He’s also been praised for his voice in the locker room, and his knowledge on the field. Basically, what I’m saying is, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone that isn’t rooting for Compton. His teammates and coaches seem to love him, and he’s quickly becoming a fan favorite in D.C. thanks to his positive attitude and willingness to interact with the fans.
Washington Redskins: Best and Worst Case Scenarios
The Redskins linebackers will play a large role in the upcoming season. With all the pass rushing playmakers, expect to see plenty of quarterbacks getting thrown to the ground. I’m talking double-digit sack totals for Kerrigan, Galette, and Smith. Despite that, it’s Compton who will be the leader and help this defense take the next step in 2016.
