Oakland Raiders Training Camp: Helu on IR, Aldon Smith in Rehab
Defensive Lineman Derrick Lott Signed
In a corresponding move to placing Helu on injured reserve, Oakland signed defensive tackle Derrick Lott to the roster.
At 6’4”, 314 pounds, Lott can line up as a 3-technique defensive tackle or 5-technique defensive end. He bounced around schools on the collegiate level, starting with Georgia in 2009 and finishing his career at Tennessee-Chattanooga in 2015.
At Tennessee-Chattanooga, Lott displayed refined technical skills with the ability to use his hands and power, per NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein:
"Has a good feel and instincts for where linemen are headed and where blocks are coming from. Excels with his hands. Gets into opponents quickly with a strong jolt and plays with necessary power and technique to unhinge and discard blockers."
Over the offseason, the Raiders have targeted pass-rushers, but Lott fits into the Mario Edwards category. He possesses the ability to rush the pocket, but his versatility drives his overall value. As a technically sound prospect, he may earn a spot on the practice squad.
