Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall took a knee during the national anthem on Thursday night ahead of their matchup with the Carolina Panthers

With Week 1 of the 2016 NFL season set to get underway, one story has remained in the forefront. Colin Kaepernick’s silent protests during national anthems have persisted. More than that, he’s been joined by other NFL players like Jeremy Lane and his teammate Eric Reid. On Thursday night with the Denver Broncos taking on the Carolina Panthers for the NFL Kickoff, Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall became the latest to join Kaepernick.

During the national anthem, the cameras panned across the Panthers sideline first. Everyone for Carolina shown was standing. As they went across the Broncos sidelines, though, Brandon Marshall was on a knee. He wasn’t demonstrative or anything of the sort. Marshall was simply kneeling there in silent protest.

Here’s a look at the video of Marshall kneeling during Thursday’s anthem in Denver:

This certainly feels like something that we may see a couple of dozen times during the opening weekend of the 2016 season.

For what it’s worth, the Broncos issued a statement almost immediately addressing the gesture from Marshall, Per ProFootballTalk, Denver said that they “respect it being a personal decision.” However, they did mention prior to saying that they “encourage members of the organization to stand.”
