The Dallas Cowboys overcame fourth-quarter miscues and surprisingly ride their defense to a tough rivalry win over the Washington Redskins

In their win over the Washington Redskins, the Dallas Cowboys improved over their offensive play from a week ago. The defense also stepped up when they when needed, including a big stop by linebacker Justin Durant on fourth down late in the fourth quarter to help set up the win.

The Cowboys shut out the Redskins in the first quarter with a 22-yard field goal by Dan Bailey and a one-yard run by Ezekiel Elliott for the 10-0 lead after one quarter.

Washington scored 10 points in the second quarter, including a 14-yard run by Matt Jones, plus a field goal by Dustin Hopkins.

The Cowboys led 13-10 at halftime, but an 11-yard touchdown by Jamison Crowder put the Redskins in the lead. Dak Prescott answered that touchdown with one for the Cowboys on a six-yard run to regain the lead in the third. Washington led at the end of the third (23-20) by making two field goals.

After committing his second fumble in the second half, the Cowboys benched Elliott for Alfred Morris, and Morris made his former team pay for not keeping him on their roster. The former Redskin running back ran for a four-yard touchdown run, scoring what was the game-winning touchdown with 4:49 left in regulation.

That touchdown was set up by the Cowboys defense when Barry Church intercepted a Kirk Cousins pass. Cousins misfired his wide receivers all day, not playing his best game in a Redskins uniform, even with 364 yards passing (28-of-46).

The defense of the Cowboys sealed the win with big stops, including a sack by Tyrone Crawford for an eight-yard loss on the final drive of the game. Washington got to the Dallas 36-yard line, but a false start penalty on the Redskins, followed by an incomplete pass, ended the game for a 27-23 win by the Cowboys.

Three Stars

Dez Bryant, Cowboys — After having one reception last week, Bryant totaled seven receptions for 102 yards, including a 21-yard reception, with the Redskins putting heavy coverage on him.

Dak Prescott, Cowboys — He didn’t play perfectly and is still looking for his first passing touchdown of the season, but Prescott isn’t playing like a rookie with two starts in the league. He was 22-of-30 for 292 yards with no interceptions. He also rushed for a six-yard touchdown.

Jordan Reed, Redskins — The Washington tight end finished with five receptions for a team-high 70 yards receiving in the loss. He had a catch of 25 yards.
