Jets at Chiefs Recap, Highlights, Final Score, More

 The New York Jets turned the ball over eight times on their way to a big road loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The story of this Week 3 matchup was turnovers. A visiting New York Jets squad came into this game after posting nearly 500 yards of offense in Week 2. They turned the ball over eight times, including six Ryan Fitzpatrick interceptions. No team deserves to win a football game at any level when they turn the ball over eight times. In the first half, three turnovers turned into seventeen points and there was no looking back for the Chiefs.

The Jets’ offense never got in a rhythm early when the game was close. A first-quarter interception by Marcus Peters ended the singular solid drive for the Jets. Before you knew it, the game was out of hand. The special teams’ fumble by rookie Jalin Marshall was the first half back-breaker. 17-3, the way the offense was going, was just an impossible hole.

In the second half, the Jets had a chance to seize the momentum. Early in the half, they got the benefit of that fumble out of the end zone, giving them a chance to bring the game to within seven. They got to the red zone and then threw another interception. That momentum swing ended up being the last chance.

The Chiefs didn’t put the game away, but the offense never gave you the feeling they were going to post the touchdown to close the gap. Give the Chiefs a great deal of credit, they had a great game plan on offense and the defense was ready for the high-powered New York offense. They disguised some coverages and forced Fitzpatrick into bad throws.

Another point for the Chiefs is how well the short passing game performed. The Jets’ linebackers looked as slow as they have in the past, watching Travis Kelce and company have their way at the second level. Kelce led all receivers with six receptions for 89 yards and one touchdown.

The bottom line is the Chiefs showed that they are better prepared for a run into January than the Jets at this point. Loud and clear.

Three Stars

Marcus Peters, Chiefs – Peters was already near the top of the league in interceptions coming into this one, and he showed why he is a marquee cornerback in this one. Two interceptions, one being quite the athletic play, proved once again how good he really is.

Alex Smith, Chiefs – In the preview I suggested that Smith should take some chances, especially against Darrelle Revis. He didn’t, but the Chiefs had an excellent game plan to beat the Jets’ aggressive defense. Smith did it to the tune of 25-of-33 for 237 yards and one touchdown.

Matt Forte, Jets – Despite their being not much room out there, Forte managed to play well, posting 65 yards on 15 carries. He is healthy again, and playing like he did as a young player.

Next week, the Jets head home to take on the Seattle Seahawks, while the Chiefs head to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers.
