AFC North: Reinforcements Coming As Suspensions Conclude

Suspensions hit the AFC North hard this offseason, but the division’s two biggest powerhouses are both getting key players back in Week 4.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals are the two heavy favorites to win the AFC North this season and both are considered Super Bowl contenders. However, both teams were also hit by suspensions this offseason. This could be part of the reason both teams are currently looking up at the Baltimore Ravens in the standings.

Things can begin to turn this week though as you can make a case the Steelers are getting their best offensive player back and the Bengals their best defensive player. (Notice I said make a case. Please save the furious Antonio Brown, Geno Atkins, or any other player comments in the comment section.)

Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell finally returns, while linebacker Vontaze Burfict returns to lead the Bengals defense. These are two major impact players looking to make an immediate impact.

Let’s break down the return of each player in Week 4.

Steelers — Le’Veon Bell

What’s not to love about Bell? Aside from his inability to pass drug tests and protect his knees, of course. Still, when healthy and active there is no running back better in the NFL. He’s elite in all phases in the game. As a runner, he has a rare combination of speed, quickness and power. His vision is impeccable and his cuts through the holes are ridiculous.

His contributions in the passing attack may be even more significant. Bell can run routes, get open, and has soft hands. Once he snatches the ball, he’s also always dangerous after the catch. Perhaps even more importantly, he’s a more than capable blocker. This allows him to stay on the field in just about every situation.

Yes, DeAngelo Williams has been a very good fiil-in for Bell, but the talent level isn’t close—especially at Williams advanced age. Don’t expect to see much of Williams moving forward (barring injury). Bell will be the early-down back, the pass-catcher, and the short-yardage/goal-line back. Bell can help swing the balance of power in the AFC North.

Bengals — Vontaze Burfict

Burfict is one of the league’s best linebackers. He impacts all aspects of the defense. The former undrafted star is an outstanding tackler and a dangerous playmaker. We’ve seen him pile up over 170 tackles. Burfict can get at the quarterback, make plays in coverage, and dislodge the ball with vicious hits. He just needs to control those hits and his temper to avoid being suspended.

His impact on this Bengals defense is immeasurable and makes them exponentially better. He can be the difference in a close game and I fully anticipate the Bengals to be even better moving forward. If they plan on making a Super Bowl run finally under Marvin Lewis, this guy is going to have to be a major factor.

Karlos Dansby did an admirable job in Burfict’s place, but Burfict is an All-Pro caliber player. His addition will be a huge lift for the 1-2 Bengals. Look for them to get back on track from here and begin their quest to secure a playoff spot.
