Last season, Tyrod Taylor was a revelation as the Buffalo Bills starting quarterback, but it looks like the enchantment might be wearing off.
At 6-6, the Buffalo Bills remain in the playoff hunt and consistent health from star wide receiver Sammy Watkins could do wonders for this team’s ability to make a late push. Thanks to LeSean McCoy, the Bills running game has been the most efficient in the NFL for a second-straight year, but the same cannot be said for the passing attack.
The Bills are just 28th in net yards per pass attempt, but not much of the blame should go to quarterback Tyrod Taylor. For the most part, he’s been forced to deliver the ball to inconsistent options. Players like Justin Hunter and Walt Powell have been given significant snaps and it’s hard to like what any wide receiver has done outside of Robert Woods.
Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole notes that the Bills are keeping Taylor’s supporting cast in mind when coming to a decision about the quarterback’s future, but they remain “uncertain” regarding Taylor’s ability to be the future of the franchise.
Taylor, 27, is under contract until 2022, but those are empty years. The Bills can come to a decision this upcoming offseason about Taylor’s future. They either pay him $27.5 million to keep him around on the fourth day of the league year or they move on from the quarterback.
While Taylor has played reasonably well this season given his situation, that’s a lot of money to shell out for a guy who averages less than 200 yards per game and just 6.6 yards per pass attempt. Taylor adds plenty to the Bills offense with his feet, but that might not be enough incentive for the Bills to keep him.

Cole reports that Buffalo could look at other options this offseason and it will be interesting to see how that goes. They have rookie Cardale Jones developing behind Taylor, but Jones ideally wouldn’t get a shot for another couple of years.
