Washington wide receiver John Ross unofficially broke the NFL Combine record in the 40-yard dash, topping Chris Johnson’s mark from 2008.

John Ross was always going to put up an impressive number in the 40-yard dash at the 2017 NFL Combine. Throughout his time at Washington in college, he showed time and again that he could take the top off of defenses. However, the question was just how impressive of a time he would put up at the Combine.

As it turns out, he would run it at a record-breaking time.

Ross stepped up to the line with more anticipation than virtually anyone that we would see at the NFL Combine to run his 40. And when he did, it was evident why that was the case. The former Huskies star effortlessly got up to top speed and, despite slowing up and coming up limping after, the unofficial time for him was clocked at 4.22 seconds—0.02 seconds faster than the record set in 2008 by running back Chris Johnson.

After what felt like an eternity waiting on his official time, the word finally came out and the unofficial time was correct. John Ross ran the fastest 40-yard dash in the history of the NFL Combine. Here’s a look at his record-breaking run:

Ross was already graded as a first-round prospect by most measures, but this makes him all the more intriguing. As we’ve seen before, front offices are sometimes blinded by speed and, obviously, Ross has more of that than anyone in this draft class.

In addition to being able to blow by virtually anyone, Ross is also a complete route-runner with amazing footwork. He’s not a big-body type guy, but he checks off every other box with bold ink. If his medicals check out (due for surgery on March 14 on his shoulder), he’s going to be a game-changer for an NFL offense.
