Houston Texans: Offering Jaelen Strong for Tony Romo Makes Sense

With the Houston Texans reportedly interested in quarterback Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys needing a receiver, could a swap for Jaelen Strong work?

Problem solved? The Houston Texans need someone not named Brock Osweiler at quarterback and the Dallas Cowboys need affordable receivers with Terrance Williams and Brice Butler set for free agency. In Houston, they have a formerly well thought of wideout who has failed to rise up the depth charts since being drafted in 2014—Jaelen Strong.

Houston moved up in the third round to select the Arizona State wideout, but he’s found himself behind DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller, Braxton Miller, and Keith Mumphery. With Strong not offering anything on special teams, it’s not likely he finds himself on the active roster much for them in 2017, if he makes the team at all.

Dallas is looking to move on from Romo following the rise of 2016 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, Dak Prescott. The belief is that, while they are hoping to get something of value for his services, eventually the Boys will have to simply cut Romo. Maybe instead the two teams can work something out where both can be happy.

Strong was a talent for the Sun Devils. The 6-3, 212-pound Strong recorded 157 receptions for 2,287 yards and 17 touchdowns in just two seasons. Since joining the Texans, he has just 28 receptions for 292 yards and three scores.

Of course, Dallas would prefer to get some draft compensation, but with no threat of actually keeping Romo—no matter what team owner Jerry Jones says—this is highly unlikely. They also don’t want to get into a bidding war for Williams or Butler. This could be a good compromise for both, and perhaps the Cowboys could still persuade Houston to throw in a late-round pick as well to sweeten the deal and keep them from having to compete for the veteran quarterback’s services.
