In an attempt to shift towards more two tight end sets next season, could the Carolina Panthers select O.J. Howard at No. 8 overall in the 2017 NFL Draft?

One of the more steady but consistent risers during the NFL draft season has been tight end O.J. Howard of Alabama, viewed as a clean prospect with a significant ceiling after his performance at the NFL combine. It’s easy to see why, as Howard tested at the top of this upcoming tight end class in nearly every category. With quality tape to back it up, it seems likely that Howard won’t wait long to hear his name called on opening night of the draft.

After a 2016 offseason in which the team tried every conceivable outlet to find a replacement for Ed Dickson, it should be expected they’ll again peruse the draft for a new backup tight end. What better option than Howard? A player that would not only fill that role, but give the team huge mismatch opportunities in pairing him with Greg Olsen.

Perhaps his most valuable skill currently comes in the form of his blocking ability, with the size and arm length to lock out defenders and create space. Frequently used all across the offensive formation, both in-line and out of the H-Back position, he would free up Olsen from blocking duty and give more downfield snaps to the Pro Bowl tight end.

While Olsen seems to be only getting better with time, at 32 years old the team must begin to consider his eventual replacement. With Howard, they get a receiving prospect with overwhelming but still raw talent. He displays reliable hands and excellent ability after the catch, but needs some polish and nuance as a route runner to truly become dominant as a pass catcher.

Taking a tight end in the top 10 is certainly risky business, as the rarity of the occurrence makes landing the right one all more important. Howard would seem to fit the bill, and would be an excellent understudy to Greg Olsen while providing immediate impact as an additional blocker. It would certainly take the right combination of players being off the board, but Howard will find himself in the mix for the Panthers.
