Kansas City Chiefs: 2017 Undrafted free agents breakdown
By Andrew Jones
Wyatt Houston, TE – Utah State
I was a bit surprised that Andy Reid didn’t dip into his usual well of BYU, but this is pretty close. Houston was a steady if unspectacular tight end for Utah State. His senior season, he caught 35 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns. He’s big, but not exactly fast, so he has a difficult time preventing similar sized defenders from setting the edge on a run. His pass-catching ability is solid, but he struggles after the catch and and before the catch in route running.
Devin Chappell, S – Oregon State
Chappell is a punisher of ball carriers. He currently holds the Oregon State school record for forced fumbles in a season with six. This is because he knows how to hit players right in the mid-section. He is the type of safety that is becoming prevalent in the NFL, one that can move inside the box as well as drop in coverage is much like Eric Berry. However, unlike Berry, Chappell doesn’t have the ball skills or the great anticipation. He could make the team with his work ethic.
Ashton Lampkin, CB – Oklahoma State
Lampkin is one of the few Combine invites on this list and, had the corner group not been so strong this year, he might have gone in the sixth round. He is an average corner that could use a lot of coaching. His biggest issue is his tackling and physicality. Lampkin seems like he has no desire to limit receivers from getting an extra few yards after contact. On the plus side, he has a wealth of experience with various coverages and sticks well with receivers in man-to-man situations.

Jordan Sterns, S – Oklahoma State
Sterns is another safety that can be big in the box but struggles when given space to cover. He tends to bite too hard on pump fakes, and focuses too much on the quarterback while in coverage. He can put a hat on ball carriers and work from sideline to sideline to get tackles. For three years he led the Cowboys in tackles, hitting the century mark each season. With these slower safeties that may be able to add on some muscle to their frames, the Chiefs may be looking to transition them to inside linebacker.
