Taking a look at when Detroit Lions 2017 training camp begins as Matthew Stafford and company look to get back to the playoffs again.

Not many people saw last season coming for the Detroit Lions. Despite the talent that they’ve long boasted on offense, it didn’t seem like their year. They had problems on the defense still, which remained an issue. Worsening the situation, though, was the retirement of Matthew Stafford’s long-time No. 1 target, Calvin Johnson.

However, the Lions still managed to make the playoffs last season as a Wild Card. Now as they’re setting up for 2017 training camp, the hope is that they’ll be able to get back to that level. To do that, though, they’ll have their work cut out for them.

Perhaps the biggest issue that the Lions face is now on the offensive line. A big part of Stafford and the offense succeeding last year was offensive tackle Taylor Decker shining as a rookie. Unfortunately, he suffered an injury in the offseason that will keep him out 4-6 months. That leaves a big hole in their protection.

Meanwhile, the Lions did make improvements to their defense this offseason. Rookie linebacker Jarrad Davis and cornerback Teez Tabor will be huge additions. They still may be lacking on that side of the ball, however, at least in relation to the offense.

With that said, it’ll be fascinating to see what the Lions look like as they prepare to make another playoff run. Thus, fans will want to see them from camp and on. Therefore, when is the start of the Detroit Lions 2017 training camp?

The Lions will begin their training camp with rookies reporting on July 24 and veterans coming on July 29. That’s a late start for this team, but they will surely work hard enough when on the practice field to make it work. Playoff appearances have eluded this team at times, but they don’t want 2017 to be that year.
