Can John Elway lead the Denver Broncos to another Super Bowl victory after signing a five year contract with the franchise?

Adam Schefter, NFL insider for ESPN, broke the news that John Elway signed a five-year contract with the Denver Broncos. Elway started his career as a front office executive in 2011 when he initially signed with the Broncos to be the team’s Director of Player Personnel.

The Broncos have a 67-29 record during Elway’s tenure with the team with five-straight winning seasons. The team has also made the playoffs in five of the last six seasons and Elway’s ability to bring in quality talent is one of the reason’s why Denver has been successful in recent years. The franchise’s biggest achievement was their 24-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50.

During his six-year tenure, Elway has endured massive changes at the quarterback position, from the Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow era to luring Peyton Manning to sign with the team. Right now, he has to figure out who is going to be the team’s long term option at quarterback. The team spent a first-round pick on Paxton Lynch in 2016 and allowed Trevor Siemian, who was a seventh-round pick in the 2015 draft, to start 14 games last year.

The malleability at the quarterback position isn’t the only thing Elway had to overcome in recent years, considering the constant turnover concerning the coaching staff created a revolving door for the Broncos. Elway started his front office career with John Fox as the Broncos head coach and in 2015 the franchise handed the keys to the car to Gary Kubiak for two seasons. The Broncos will now roll with Vance Joseph as the team’s head coach for the 2017 season. Joseph’s last stint was with the Miami Dolphins, where he was the team’s defensive coordinator.

Elway is locked in with the Broncos through 2021. His imprint is illuminating through all areas of the team, from the coaching staff, to quarterback and even to special teams. The team has been successful in recent years. Even with less talent going into the 2017 season compared to previous seasons, the team is still looking to compete for playoff contention.

With that being said, Elway was a must-sign for the franchise due to his recent success and his ability to get deals done with top tier free agents like he did with Peyton Manning in 2012.

I really like this signing. I believe in order to be a good franchise, the organization must take care of their people, and that’s what the ownership did by signing Elway to a five-year deal. He’s very competitive and his fiery spirit radiates through the entire franchise.

Consistency is a big deal when it comes to building a winning franchise and keeping the front office personnel intact is key to overall success. The team won’t deal with much change in the near future and will only build upon their current plans for how they want to acquire the talent needed to make the team better. Elway is going to be a Bronco for a very long time.
