The New York Jets have a talented young wide receiver in Charone Peake, and we take a look at his 2017 training camp profile.

The New York Jets are retooling their wide receiver corps with the departures of veterans Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. Quincy Enunwa has taken over the mantle as the No. 1 wideout, while Robby Anderson appears to be the other starter.

Second-year player Charone Peake is just one of several players that are vying for the number three wide receiver role during camp and preseason contests.

Let’s take a look at his training camp profile:

2016 Season Recap

The Clemson product played in 15 games and had 19 receptions on 35 targets for 186 yards. He did not score a touchdown. The 6-2, 208-pounder enjoyed his best game on Oct. 17 in Arizona with five catches for 43 yards in New York’s 28-3 setback to the Cardinals.

More from New York Jets

Peake was the 241st overall selection in the 2016 NFL Draft, so the Jets were pleased to get some production from their seventh-round pick. Many seventh-round selections don’t even make it in the NFL.

2017 Season Outlook

Peake could have the inside track for the WR3 slot once the season opens in Buffalo on Sept. 10. Rookie ArDarius Stewart has been battling groin and thumb injuries while fellow rookie Chad Hansen has been dealing with knee and hamstring issues and may need more time to develop. Peake needs to come out strong, because the Jets envision Enunwa, Stewart and Hansen being their top three receivers moving forward.

Jalin Marshall may be a factor as well, but he is suspended for the first four games due to violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs. Peake needs to take advantage of his window of opportunity before his competition is up and running at full speed. A seventh-round draft pick always needs to prove himself and Peake is no exception.

Training Camp Forecast

Peake should get some additional reps during camp due to the absence of Marshall and the health issues of Stewart and Hansen. He obviously needs to stay healthy to take advantage of his opportunity and he must perform well during pre-season games. The Jets like his potential and the way he can stretch the field with his deep speed — he ran a 4.37-esecond 40-yard dash during his Pro Day in 2016.

You can’t teach speed and Peake has plenty of it. It will be interesting to see how this talented former Clemson Tigers star continues to develop with additional time on the playing field.
