Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Zach Hocker signed after cutting Roberto Aguayo
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have quickly found a new kicker to backup Nick Folk after cutting Roberto Aguayo
I was wrong and I will admit it. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have indeed found a replacement for Roberto Aguayo. The team signed kicker Zach Hocker on Sunday, giving a backup to Nick Folk.
Not much is known about Hocker. What we do know is that he last appeared in the NFL in 2015, playing in eight games for the then-St. Louis Rams and New Orleans Saints. He made 10-of-14 field goal attempts that year, and was money on extra-point attempts, converting 12-of-13.
Hocker was a seventh-round draft pick of the Washington Redskins in 2014, but he had a rough go of things. He lost his job to Kai Forbath, the same kicker who beat him for the job in New Orleans after the former missed four of his 13 field goal attempts.
As I see it, Folk will still be the starter. It is worth noting that, as mentioned, Hocker has had struggles of his own. That is not to say he is not good. 2015 proved that he was very dependable on extra points, something that should not be overlooked. At the very least, this will give Tampa Bay a dependable depth piece in case Folk struggles.
It will be interesting to see how Hocker performs over the course of these next couple of games. It should be a relatively seamless transition given the nature of the position. However, he has shown that he can have streaks of inconsistency, so there is always the chance that he can falter.

This was a good move by the Buccaneers in the sense that it gives Folk competition so that he will not be complacent. Having a player rest on his laurels is more often than not a very bad thing.
