Los Angeles Rams: Jared Goff audition slated for Raiders exhibition
Jared Goff’s audition to be the Los Angeles Rams franchise quarterback job begins in preseason game in Oakland
The Los Angeles Rams bust question begins in earnest this weekend with the Jared Goff audition against the Oakland Raiders. Pundits already are debating Goff’s long-term success in Los Angeles, based on his seven-game NFL career. He had a 0-7 record as a starter and a 22.2 quarterback rating in 2016.
The Rams’ first exhibition against the Dallas Cowboys did little to sway the needle on Goff. He played only eight downs, leading a touchdown drive off a muffed Cowboys punt return. Los Angeles coach Sean McVay said he’s balancing Goff’s need for playing time with ensuring the health of the rest of the offensive starters. McVay added that Goff’s minutes will increase on Saturday in Oakland.
The coach has used politically correct language in addressing Goff’s progress throughout the offseason and now in camp. As a result, his assessment of Goff has been vanilla.

For example, McVay said the following about Goff in an interview with ESPN’s Mike and Mike on Wednesday:
"“I think when you look at being receptive to the new information, being able to get in and out of the huddle, handle how the different coverages affect your progression in the timing and the rhythm of different plays — I think he’s done a nice job.I think the best indicator and the best way to judge a quarterback is ultimately when you’re playing in those games when you can actually get hit.”"
McVay’s comments fall in line with the team’s motto of “We, not me.” Goff’s progress doesn’t matter if the rest of the Rams offense remains stagnant. That said, McVay has been positive with the quarterback’s play but hasn’t lavished heaps of praise.
And perhaps with good reason. Goff threw three interceptions during Monday’s practice, The Rams Wire reported. He had two more on Tuesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted.
The Rams defense likely has a good understanding of the plays it sees in practice, which may enhance Goff’s pick total. McVay rightfully is concerned about injuries on the offense. The unit’s health increases in importance as the season opener against the Indianapolis Colts draws near.

But the coach also must begin the Goff audition so he can plan for this season and beyond. Because the Rams face little pressure to win this season, the Goff evaluation takes center stage during the preseason.
