What will the Denver Broncos offense look like with Trevor Siemian as the starting quarterback in 2017?

According to 104.3 The Fan’s Twitter account, a radio station that covers local sports in the Denver area, Trevor Siemian will be the Denver Broncos starting quarterback for the 2017 season. This is big news for Broncos fans because it ends the quarterback battle between Siemian and Paxton Lynch.

Siemian sealed the deal with his performance in the Broncos’ most recent preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers where he completed eight of his 11 pass attempts for 93 yards and a touchdown. He hasn’t been super productive in the preseason but he has displayed that he can efficiently run the offense.

Paxton Lynch’s struggles was one of the main reasons why Siemian was able to win the job. Lynch produced dismal performances in both preseasons games, giving the Broncos no choice but to proclaim Siemian the starting quarterback. Lynch’s development has became a major concern for the Broncos’ organization which will cause them to look elsewhere for their franchise quarterback in the next couple of seasons.

Last year, Siemian passed for 3,401 yards and 18 touchdowns while completing 59.5 percent of his pass attempts. The Broncos finished last season ranked 27th in the league with 5,169 total yards, making them one of the worst offenses in the league.

More from Denver Broncos

Denver only passed the ball 570 times last year, ranking just 17th in the league. Expect the passing volume to be very similar to the previous year with the team leaning on the run game to move the chains. The team averaged just 3.6 yards per attempt on the ground last year and they will need to improve their efficiency while running the football in order for the Broncos to have a chance to compete with some of the top teams in the league. Siemian can’t do it all, so the run game will need to carry the offense if the wants to be able to move the chains.

Expect Siemian to play a little better compared to last year. He has more experience under center as an NFL quarterback and he should be more acclimated to the speed of the game. Siemian should be able to run the offense a lot more efficiently and be able to convert more of his pass attempts. We should see Denver moving the ball in the air a little bit better compared to last year.

The offense supported two 1,000-yard receivers last year in Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders, but after that the next most productive receiver was Devontae Booker who caught 31 passes for 265 yards and one touchdown. However, compared to Thomas’ four previous seasons, his production took a 24.1 percent hit with Siemian and Lynch at quarterback.

Siemian is well deserving of the starting quarterback job. Hopefully, he can improve and build upon of what he did during the previous year. He has the weapons to be a very productive quarterback. Expectations should be limited, because he will never be the next “John Elway“, but he is capable of effectively running the offense to keep the chains moving.
