Ex-boss Mike Martz laid down the Los Angeles Rams coaching gauntlet to current mentor Sean McVay

Mike Martz, a ghost of Rams coaching past, never has lacked for arrogance. For some reason, Martz decided to share his feelings on first-year Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay in an upcoming book, Sporting News reported.

Author Thomas George quotes Martz in an upcoming book titled, Blitzed: Why NFL Teams Gamble on Starting Rookie Quarterbacks. And if Martz is a fan of McVay, he has a weird way of showing it.

"“This guy is a quarterback expert? An offensive expert? Wait a minute while I puke,” Martz said, in an excerpt from Thomas George’s upcoming book, “Blitzed: Why NFL Teams Gamble on Starting Rookie Quarterbacks.”“Right, he’s going to be able to teach and handle and guide Jared through tough times because of all of his expertise and knowledge? Right. I’m not going to drink that Kool-Aid.”"

Sporting News acknowledges that McVay served as offensive coordinator under quarterback guru Jay Gruden. Kirk Cousins has flourished under the Redskins system the past two seasons. Cousins has thrown for more than 9,000 yards with 54 touchdowns and 23 interceptions in 2015-16 combined. He had a passer rating of 101.6 in 2015 and 97.2 last season.

Martz served as Rams offensive coordinator when backup Kurt Warner led the team to a Super Bowl XXXIV victory. He was Rams head coach when the then-St. Louis-based team lost to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVI.

Martz had a 53-32 record in five-plus seasons with St. Louis. He arguably had the NFL’s best team from 2000-03 but never won the big game. He also criticized the Jeff Fisher regime, saying no one on that staff was capable of serving as a mentor.

Martz attacked McVay’s youth, again per Sporting News:

"“What is he, a couple of months older than Jared?” he asked. “They hired a buddy for Jared. The NFL has nothing to do with being the friend or the buddy of the quarterback. You’ve got to coach them and work them hard with respect. But buddy?”"

Yahoo Sports! later reported that Martz went on ESPN 710 LA and denied making those statements.

"“I would never say something like that,” he said. “[The quote] was kind of embellished.”"

McVay “buddied” Goff into a 16-of-20 outing in a recent exhibition game against the Oakland Raiders. Goff threw for 160 yards with one touchdown. It’s by far the best Goff has looked since entering the league as the No. 1 overall pick in 2016.

And while the jury still is out on the Goff-McVay partnership, Martz might’ve been wise to reserve his so-called “expertise” judgment on the latest Rams coaching hire.
