The Los Angeles Chargers and the Los Angeles Rams are ready to square off in the third week of the preseason, but one storyline outshines the rest.
According to Ricky Henne of the Los Angeles Chargers‘ official website, we could potentially see Chargers’ Pro-Bowl cornerback Jason Verrett play for the first time in the 2017 NFL preseason. Fans of the team haven’t seen much of Verrett since he went down with an injury early last season, so it would ease a ton of anxiety to see him have success on Saturday night.
While Henne mentioned that head coach Anthony Lynn would like to see Verrett get some playing time against the Rams, we’re not exactly sure just how many snaps he will see.
Not to mention, the former TCU player has yet to play a full season since since coming to the NFL, so it might be wise to pull him out of the game late in the second quarter.

The 26-year old defensive back played in six games his rookie year, 14 games in 2015 and four games in 2016. Needless to say, Verrett hasn’t been the poster child for consistency over the past three years for the Chargers.
Los Angeles is coming into this season with high hopes on the defensive side of the football, so playing Verrett in this game should, again, come with some caution. The Chargers have unfortunately been dealt a terrible hand with injuries the past few seasons, so it would definitely be a shame to see their best corner get banged up in a meaningless football game.
That being said, I believe the Chargers should view Verrett the same way most teams are viewing their superstars in the preseason. While it’s important that they see some game-action, it’s even more important that they will be ready to play in week one of the regular season.

Let’s be honest, while Casey Hayward had a fantastic season in 2016, but Verrett is clearly still the team’s best defensive-back heading into this year.
