Ex-Los Angeles Rams running back Eric Dickerson’s clout showed as the team released backup kicker to sign the former star to a one-day contract

Now 24 years since he last played for the Los Angeles Rams, Eric Dickerson’s clout with the team is impressive. The Rams waived backup kicker Travis Coons to sign Dickerson, the Hall of Famer, to a one-day contract, several media outlets reported.

In a statement released after signing the one-day contract, Dickerson had this to say as part of a statement (via ESPN):

"“It feels amazing to sign this contract and officially be a Los Angeles Ram for life. My passion for this organization during my playing days and for the players wearing Rams jerseys now is undeniable.”"

ESPN.com added that Dickerson told an L.A. radio station he soon may have an official role with the franchise.

More from Los Angeles Rams

The 56-year old Dickerson made news last season with his tiff with former coach Jeff Fisher. Dickerson claimed Fisher banned him from the sidelines because of Dickerson’s criticism of the team. Dickerson said he would not attend another Rams game until the Rams replaced Fisher. That public relations nightmare signaled the beginning of Fisher’s demise.

Now, Dickerson has displaced another Ram. To complete the ceremonial contract, the Rams had to unload Coons. Coons converted 28-of-32 field-goal attempts for the Cleveland Browns last season. He was 22-of-24 on extra-point attempts.

Coons, however, cost the Rams a chance to remain undefeated in the preseason. He missed a 33-yard field goal in the fourth quarter of their 21-19 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday. The kicker did nail a 53-yarder earlier in the game, though.

ESPN.com reported that Coons likely will rejoin the Rams once Dickerson officially retires — although the team could use a third-down back because of Lance Dunbar’s injury issues. If the Rams hire Dickerson in an official capacity, members of the current organization should beware.

Dickerson’s clout with the team already has displaced two members of the franchise. One permanently, one temporarily. Who knows what will happen if Dickerson actually has power within the Rams front office?
