Cincinnati Bengals: Comparing Huber’s To Other Great Fakeouts
By Kenn Korb
Reggie Hodges Record-Setting 68-Yard Rush
The Browns haven’t really ever been all that good since returning to the league in 1999, but even they have had their share of highlight-worthy plays in the years since.
Here’s one of them in a game against New Orleans back in 2010:
What Makes It Great
- Hodges has a quick, smooth transition from setting up his kicking motion into pulling the ball in to run with it.
- The blocking opened up a massive hole in the center of the play, one so big Hodges may have been able to walk for a first down.
- Made at least one tackler miss completely
- The play took what would’ve likely become decent field position for New Orleans with a punt and turned it into a major gain for Cleveland instead.
- His run ended up going for 68 yards, a record for a punter.
- The team eventually scored on this drive, turning a 10-3 lead into a 13-3 advantage.
- Came in the regular season, so that adds weight to the result.
What Holds It Back
- The most impressive part was provided by the blocking up front rather than what the player accomplished himself; outside of the eluded tackle, it was almost exclusively an open field ahead of him until he was tackled.
- For as far as he went, he didn’t score himself; had he, this would have been that much more impressive.
- While he did force a missed tackle, once had hands on him he went down pretty easily.
Final Grade: 9/10
It was awesome and record-setting play, but the ending does still leave a little something to be desired in my eyes.
