Chris Jones Goes Around The Edge

Despite Tony Romo going down in the preseason, the Dallas Cowboys finally lived up to their annual massive hypefest by going 13-3 and getting the NFC’s No. 1 seed in the playoffs.

One of the few times they actually struggled during the regular season was in a game against their rival Philadelphia Eagles.

They were actually down, 20-10, late in the third quarter when this happened:

What Makes It Great

  • Dallas was behind two scores with the third quarter winding down, about to give the ball right back to Philadelphia; instead, Dallas keeps a key drive moving towards an eventual score late in a game they would eventually win in overtime.
  • Fluid transition from punting to running, leaving a potential tackler grasping at air to start his run.
  • Blocking allowed Jones to not be touched at all on his way to picking up 30 yards on the run.
  • Jones is able to keep pace ahead of Eagles defenders — players who should generally be much faster than a punter.
  • Because of the eventual win that this play helped, Dallas secured the top NFC seed while also bolstering the appearance of being practically undefeatable (except against the Giants).

What Holds It Back

  • While still impressive, the play seems pretty routine as far as these sort of fakes go.
  • Runs out of bounds multiple yards away from the nearest tackler (who happened to be the notoriously tiny Darren Sproles)

Final Verdict: 7/10

It wasn’t the most impressive-looking play, sure, but the importance and impact of it in the grand scheme of this particular game and season leave us with plenty to like here.
