The Los Angeles Chargers trimmed their final 53-man roster on Saturday afternoon, take a look at the biggest surprises from the announcement.
The Los Angeles Chargers finished their preseason schedule with a 1-3 record, but we shouldn’t assume that this team will be that bad in 2017. Actually, there are some people who believe that the ‘Bolts could be a surprise playoff contender this year. If that’s indeed the case, that will be because the front-office nailed their final roster cuts before the regular season.
If you didn’t already know, every NFL franchise had to make their final cuts by 4:00pm on Saturday afternoon. While trimming a roster to only 53 men isn’t easy whatsoever, Chargers fans should take comfort in the fact that their final roster is definitely legit, even with a handful of surprising cuts.
These are the players I was most surprised to see let go after the team made their announcement on Saturday afternoon:
More from Los Angeles Chargers
- 5 rookies to target for your Fantasy Football drafts In 2023
- Justin Herbert Becomes The Highest Paid Player in NFL
- Despite struggles, Justin Herbert is unquestioned franchise player for Chargers

- NFL 2023: Ranking the 5 best wide receiver groups in the league
- Quarterback: Kellen Clemens
- Safety: Dwight Lowery
- Kicker: Josh Lambo
- Wide Receiver: Artavis Scott
Everyone has different reactions this time of the year, but I was truly surprised that Dwight Lowery and Josh Lambo didn’t make the cut. Both players were key parts of the 2016 San Diego football team, but again, that isn’t saying much.
Instead, Los Angeles will lean on rookie kicker Younghoe Koo to come through in the clutch for them in 2017. We’ve heard great things about the kid from Georgia Southern, but I definitely didn’t believe he would make the team over the veteran Lambo.
Also, it seems was though the Chargers were pleased enough with Rayshawn Jenkins and Tre Boston, as letting Dwight Lowery loose is definitely a bold decision. However, I don’t think any Chargers fan is going to miss the veteran safety anytime soon.

At the end of the day, Chargers fans should be happy with the final 53-man roster. Sure, there were some surprises here and there, but I believe they ultimately chose the best 53 players to help this franchise get back to the NFL Playoffs.
