Los Angeles Chargers general manager Tom Telesco gave an updated on rookie wide receiver Mike Williams and his injury
The Los Angeles Chargers have a ton of hope for Mike Williams’ future in the NFL, which is exactly why the used their top-10 pick in the 2017 NFL Draft on him. However, hope is the only thing they have gotten from the former Clemson Tigers football player, as Williams has been out with a back injury since this summer.
With the regular season starting this weekend, many Chargers fans hoped that, by some miracle, Williams would be taking the field against Denver. We all know those dreams would never become a reality, but we did get a good vibe from the team’s general manager in his interview with Ricky Henne of the team’s official website.
Take a look at Tom Telesco’s thoughts on Williams’ status in Henne’s article:

"“Obviously it’s encouraging that he’s on the 53-man roster right now and not PUP, so that’s positive. We’ll just stay with the plan that’s been put in place. I would say he’s still a couple weeks away from practicing. He’ll do more this week and the following week as far as what he’s doing on the side. That will continue to progress. And then we’ll gradually start working him into practice after that. We still have several weeks in front of us. It’s not only rehabbing injury, he has to get back and ready in football condition again. Running routes. The timing. Learning the offense and everything like that, so there is still some work in front of him. But obviously it’s very encouraging where he is right now. Hopefully it just continues to be positive steps.”"
Not having Williams on the field Monday night against the Broncos isn’t ideal, but it’s hard to not be encouraged by Telesco’s comments. Yes, Williams is still rehabbing, but he was put on the team’s official 53-man roster and not the PUP list — that alone is a huge deal for a guy who was rumored to miss the entire season.
Not to mention, it’s nice to finally get some clarity on Williams’ status, instead of reading rumors. Just inferring from Henne’s article, it sounds as though Chargers fans could possibly see their rookie receiver on the field in early-to-mid October. While Los Angeles does have two division games against Denver and Kansas City this month, it may be more beneficial to ease him back onto the field.
