New York Jets: Week 1 Report Card vs. Bills
The New York Jets opened their 2017 season against the Buffalo Bills Sunday at New Era Field in Buffalo. Grades are in – here is their report card.
Football is back — finally. The New York Jets opened their 2017 campaign Sunday afternoon with a 21-12 setback to the Buffalo Bills at New Era Field in Buffalo. The victory gives the Bills a 61-53 lead in the all-time series between these old AFL rivals.
This was a battle between two squads that are not expected to vie for a playoff berth. Certainly not the Jets anyway. The one thing that Gang Green could not do was let LeSean McCoy and Tyrod Taylor beat them and that’s exactly what happened. Any surprise? If you’re a Jets fan, you know the answer to that one.
Anyway, grades are in, so let’s take a look at New York’s initial report card of the new season:
Offense
The Jets were held to just 214 total yards, including a paltry 38 on the ground. Bilal Powell led all rushers with 22 yards on seven carries. That’s brutal. The offensive line is a major issue for this club. They could get not get any push when running the ball and did a poor job of protecting quarterback Josh McCown. McCown had to hurry many of his throws but still was very efficient for three quarters. He finished 26 for 39 for 187 yards and two interceptions but those two picks came in the fourth quarter when Gang Green was trying to rally.
McCown had little time to throw so most of his passes were either dumpoffs or short, intermediate throws. He actually kept the Jets in the game for the first three quarters when New York trailed just 14-12. McCown had success firing passes to Jermaine Kearse (7 receptions for 59 yards) and tight end Will Tye (3-34). Yes, the Jets are looking for their tight end now. It’s a miracle. Matt Forte had two dropped passes. Robby Anderson (4-22) had a quiet afternoon. They need to at least attempt some post routes for him moving forward. That means McCown needs more time to throw. Easier said than done.
