Special Teams

Chandler Catanzaro barely won the kicking competition with Ross Martin, but boy did he pay off against Buffalo by booting two long field goals (from 48 and 52 yards). Those field goals kept the Jets in the game in the first half. The University of Clemson product has always had a strong leg, but needed to bounce back after disappointing season with Arizona in 2016.

Punter Lachlan Edwards enjoyed one of his best days as a pro, averaging 49.5 yards on six boots. New York’s punt and kickoff coverages were solid and Kalif Raymond averaged nine yards on three punt returns.

Coaching

Todd Bowles did not make any bonehead mistakes but he did leave three time outs on the clock in the first half. Time management has never been his forte. His team played very hard and gave a strong effort, but they did not execute effectively against McCoy and Taylor.

In addition, it did not make any sense for Bowles to list Christian Hackenberg as the No. 2 quarterback over Bryce Petty. Petty outplayed Hackenberg in the preseason and deserved to be the backup against the Bills. Hackenberg simply is not ready.
