Green Bay Packers: Quick game is solution to offensive line problems
By Hunter Noll
The Green Bay Packers might have a problem heading into Week 2 with injuries on the offensive line, but a quick offense could help combat that.
Losing one starting tackle is never easy on an offense. Losing both seems like a death sentence for your quarterback. Aaron Rodgers is an extremely tough play, but the Green Bay Packers won’t want to take any chances there.
David Bakhtiari and Bryan Bulaga could both miss the Packers Week 2 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons. If that happens, Green Bay will need to change up it’s strategy. Losing two starters on the offensive line creates a lot of problems. Clearly you don’t expect the protection to be as strong. This leaves both the running and passing games a little more vulnerable.
Luckily, the Packers have the resources to soften the blow.
First, of course, is Rodgers. One of the best quarterbacks in the NFL can do more than just sling the football. Rodgers is a master of moving around in the pocket and giving his receivers more time to get open.

Then there’s his weapons, two in particular. Even with his expert pocket skills, Rodgers might not have as much time to get rid of the ball as usual. Meanwhile, the average Green Bay run game could struggle even more with a makeshift offensive line. This leaves a short-quick game as the most reasonable option. That’s a game that Martellus Bennett and Ty Montgomery could thrive in.
Bennett is an extremely versatile tight end, and has no problem making plays after the catch. Rodgers could find him on a lot of quick routes, and let him steal some extra yards for Green Bay.
Meanwhile, this is clearly the kind of game Montgomery was built for. One of the best receiving backs in football, he has sure-hands and fantastic ability in open space. Giving him a little more love in the passing game isn’t going to hurt the Packers.
Of course, Green Bay has other weapons as well. Randall Cobb has the ability to help no matter what offense the Packers decide to run. Jordy Nelson and Davante Adams will be there whenever Rodgers wants to get some true passes off too.

This leaves the option to get some real passing plays in there as well, leaving the Falcons unbalanced.
With so many weapons, but so little line, the Packers offense might look a little different on Sunday. While a short-pass offense might not be the usual game plan, Green Bay can make it work.
