The Philadelphia Eagles faced the Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 17, in NFL Week 2. Here are the highlights and a recap from the game.
In Week 2 of the 2017 NFL season, the Philadelphia Eagles travel to Missouri to take on the Kansas City Chiefs on Sept. 17. The game had a great backstory because of Andy Reid, who is the current Chiefs head coach, used to be the Eagles head coach.
Reid was fired in Philly and has been with the Chiefs ever since. To continue the interesting backstory, Doug Pederson, who is the Eagles head coach, was Reid’s offensive coordinator in Kansas City two years ago.
For the big numbers that the Eagles and Chiefs both put up in their Week 1 wins, that seemed like a distant memory in the first half of this game. Though both teams showed flashes, neither Carson Wentz nor Alex Smith could find much of a rhythm when they had the ball. All that could get on the board was two field goals for the home team and one for the visitors heading into halftime.
Coming out of the half, it seemed like the offense might start to pick up. Wentz seemed to find his sea-legs in Arrowhead and showed it off with a nice third-quarter touchdown toss to Alshon Jeffery. That put the Eagles ahead, but the Chiefs had a little something of their own.
After breaking out last week, Kareem Hunt decided to get in on the action. He came into the fold and broke a handoff out to the left sideline. That’s when the rookie turned on the jets and couldn’t be caught as he took back the lead for Kansas City. However, Wentz drove again to get the Eagles a field goal to tie it.
KC couldn’t find anything on their next drive, but their defense came up big after. They stopped the starting-to-groove Wentz and picked up off on a nice play. That put the crowd into the game and they seemed to drive them down the field for a Travis Kelce touchdown to go ahead, 20-13. Hunt then piled on with his second rushing score of the day, pushing the home team ahead by two scores.
That put Philly in desperation mode, trying to drive quickly and make magic happen. Wentz found Nelson Agholor with eight seconds left in the game in the back of the end zone, but that seemed far too late — until they recovered the onside kick that ensued.
With five second remaining, they were looking deep in the end zone on the Hail Mary. There was no luck to be found, though, as it was patted incomplete by the Chiefs, who stayed perfect in a much more hard-fought matchup than in Week 1.
