Green Bay Packers: 3 Takeaways vs Falcons in Week 2
By Nick Sparrow
The Green Bay Packers traveled Mercedes-Benz Stadium to take the Atlanta Falcons. Here are three takeaways from Sunday’s game.
Week 2’s Sunday Night Football game featured a rematch of the 2016 NFC Championship game between the Green Bay Packers and the Atlanta Falcons. In the debut of the Falcons new stadium, the Packers were hoping to spoil the housewarming party in the ATL. Unfortunately for them, that wasn’t on the menu.
The Packers fell behind in the first half and then watched the Falcons pull away in the second. Even with a spirited comeback effort in the fourth quarter, the deficit was too large. With that, let’s take a look at three takeaways for Green Bay after this loss.
3. The Packers struggle to score in first half
Through their first two games of the season, the Green Bay offense has consistently struggled to put up points in the first half of games. The Packers failed to score at all in their Week 1 contest against the Seattle Seahawks and only scored seven points in the first half on Sunday night’s game. In fact, Aaron Rodgers only had 85 passing yards in the entire first half. Rodgers also threw an interception in the first half for the second consecutive week.
The Packers lost their best offensive weapon in Jordy Nelson early in Sunday’s game, so that could have a lot to do with their struggles on offense. However, Nelson played the entire game in Week 1 and we still saw them start the game very slow and that was at home. It is apparent that Green Bay’s offense is not clicking early in games for whatever reason.
Green Bay started the entire 2016 season slow as well. The Packers were 4-6 entering Week 12 before putting together an eight-game winning streak that carried them all the way to the NFC championship game. The problems here could be similar, as we will have to see how they perform as the season goes on.
