The New York Jets dropped a 45-20 decision to the Oakland Raiders on Sunday in their second game of the 2017 season. Here is their report card.

The New York Jets traveled to the Black Hole in Oakland on Sunday to face the high-powered Raiders in the second game of the season for these old AFL rivals. The silver and black entered this contest as huge 14-point favorites and they did not disappoint Raider Nation. Michael Crabtree hauled in three touchdown passes from Derek Carr to power Oakland to a 45-20 triumph over Gang Green at the Oakland Coliseum. It’s not easy to walk into the lion’s den.

The loss dropped the Jets to 0-2 as they head into their home opener this coming Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. The win lifted the Raiders to 2-0 and gave them a 25-19-3 lead in their all-time series with New York.

The momentum of this game turned completely around on a special teams gaffe by New York in the second quarter (more on that later). Anyway, the report card is in and this is not a report card that you would want to take home to mom and dad. Here we go:

Offense

Quarterback Josh McCown was steady in the pocket and kept Gang Green in the game for most of the first half. The 38-year old signal-caller was 17-of-25 for 166 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He has quickly found his favorite wide receiver in Jermaine Kearse (four receptions for 64 yards and two touchdowns). McCown added 31 yards on the ground and had a little more time to throw this week.

It was about time that the Jets threw some vertical routes to stretch the defense. The Raiders did force McCown into a lost fumble when they dialed up the pressure in the second half, forcing him to cough up the ball on one of their four sacks.

Kearse was terrific but the rest of the offensive attack was severely lacking. Once again, Robby Anderson (two catches for 28 yards) and Bilal Powell (six carries for 13 yards and no receptions) were invisible for the most part. What has happened to Powell? Yikes.

Will Tye (one catch, four yards) was a non-factor at tight end. That was disappointing. Matt Forte actually had a little spring in his step (nine carries for 53 yards and four catches for 38 yards). The offensive line still needs to show more power and thrust at the point of attack.
