Special Teams

The momentum of this game turned around on a single special teams blunder by the Jets. With New York trailing 14-10 with 1:50 remaining in the second quarter, Kalif Raymond went back to field a Raiders punt inside his own 15-yard line. That was the first mistake. Raymond seemed to lose the ball in the sun, muffed the punt, and Oakland pounced on the loose ball at the Jets four. Three plays later, Lynch plowed into the end zone from two yards out to give the winners a 21-10 lead. The Jets never recovered.

Why didn’t Raymond just get out of the way and let the ball bounce? It was too risky to try and field a punt that deep in his own territory. That was a huge gaffe. It changed the whole game. Any chance Gang Green had to pull a possible upset went out the window right there.

Chandler Catanzaro booted a pair of long field goals and has looked very good so far. But because of Raymond’s miscue, New York gets a failing grade here. That muffed punt was an absolute killer.

Coaching

Head coach Todd Bowles is known for making dumb time management decisions but he didn’t do anything egregious in this contest. He finally made Bryce Petty the number two quarterback, something he should have done last week. It was about time.

However, Bowles is a defensive coach and his defense was brutal once again. He made no adjustments to stop Oakland’s rushing attack. His team looked completely overwhelmed in the second half. For that he receives a failing grade.
