Seattle Seahawks: 3 Takeaways vs 49ers in Week 2
By Nick Sparrow
The Seattle Seahawks hosted the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday in an NFC West division matchup. Here are three takeaways from the game.
The San Francisco 49ers faced off against the Seattle Seahawks in an NFC West rivalry game in which both teams were looking to avoid starting the season 0-2. The Seahawks struggled early in the game but were able to put a game-winning drive together late to be the 49ers 12-9 at home.
While they picked up the victory, it was a mixed bag for Seattle in this one. As such, let’s take a look at the biggest takeaways for the Seahawks from Week 1.
3. Chris Carson emerges as future starter
The Seahawks have not been able to find a productive running back since Marshawn Lynch went down with an injury in 2015. Seattle signed former Green Bay running back Eddie Lacy in the offseason but has been so unimpressive with the team so far that he was a healthy scratch for Sunday’s game.
Seattle also has C.J. Prosise and Thomas Rawls on the roster. Rawls just returned from an injury so was limited in this game, carrying the ball five times for only four yards. Prosise did not get a carry but did catch three passes for 22 yards.
After their Week 2 performance though, it appears Seattle has found their future running back in rookie Chris Carson. Carson was drafted in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma State but appears to be the front-runner to get the majority of Seattle’s carries for the rest of the season. Carson rushed the ball 20 times for 93 yards, averaging 4.7 yards per carry. If Carson continues this performance he should get the majority of touches for the rest of the season.
The Seattle offense relies heavily on the run game. The Seahawks use their rushing to set the tempo of the game, control the clock, and set up plays for quarterback Russell Wilson. If they have found a feature-back in Carson, expect their offense to improve significantly as the season progresses.
