Week 3 of the NFL season features a division matchup between the 2-0 Carolina Panthers and the 0-2 New Orleans Saints. The Saints have had a rough start to the season after a loss on the road to the Minnesota Vikings and a loss at home to the New England Patriots. This could be a historic game for Carolina quarterback Cam Newton. If the Panthers win this game, Newton will earn his 54th career win with the team, setting a franchise record. With the Panthers win in Week 2, Newton tied quarterback Jake Delhomme’s record of 53.

History is certainly in favor of the Panthers in this matchup. Carolina has beaten the Saints in four of their last five meetings. If the Saints lose this game to start the season 0-3, their odds of making the playoffs drop from 12% to 3%. Since 1980, only five of the 164 teams to start their season 0-3 have actually gone on to make the postseason. The Saints were hoping to make the playoffs for the first time since 2013, but if they want any chance to do this game is a must-win.
